Lula Cato

Born: Albany, GA
Occupation: Housekeeper
Spouse: Rev. John White in 1925
Resting Place:  Lincoln Cemetery - Atlanta, GA

Lula was born in Albany, Georgia. She joined Robin Springs Baptist Church in Sandersville, GA at an early age. She was short, standing 4' and some inches and was bow-legged. She cleaned hospitals in Sandersville. She loved her family tremendously. One day while taking lunch to her brothers at Puckwood Truck, she met Johnny White. from Sparta, Georgia.

In 1925, she and Johnny married. Johnny was 10 years older than Lula and they had 11 children; 7 sons and 4 daughters. A interesting fact about the Johnny & Lula is that they were both born in December and died in February. In 1955, Lula moved to Atlanta, GA with her younger children while Johnny stayed in the country another 8 years because he didn't like big cities. Lula worked as a maid cleaning houses earning $25 per week. She became a member of the New Hope Baptist Church where she was very active on the Mother's Board and as a Sunday School Teacher.

She loved to travel. She often visited her sister Lizzie in Macon and other siblings in Sandersville. She even ventured further to visit her son Theodis, his Wife Rosella and their children in Cleveland a few times. One trip in particular was by Nancy Hanks train to pick up her dentures. Even her first plane ride was to Cleveland. She had an interesting sense of humor where she was funny without trying. She loved to dress up "fancy" and be photographed in her outfits. She always had her pocketbook, gloves, and hat for church. She had a lot of hair but wore wigs often. She loved cooking and could be found making fried chicken, biscuits & gravy every Sunday morning for breakfast and she also made a lemon cheesecake that her family was fond of.

Johnny pastored a church in the cow pasture. Every Sunday before church the family would hav to go clean the pasture before services could began. Johnny and Lula are buried beside each other at Lincoln Cemetery in Atlanta, GA along with a few of their grandchildren.
